Mass surveillance isn’t new, but AI-powered systems are providing governments more efficient ways of keeping tabs on the public. AI cameras can analyze data about your body, behaviors, even your gait.

AI surveillance systems were implemented in Paris for the 2024 Olympics, and have not been de-installed now that the games have ended. The US Border Patrol uses AI dogs to “multiply their forces.” The Quarterly Journal of Economics published a study suggesting that fewer people protest when public safety agencies acquire AI surveillance software to complement their cameras.

This editorial series tells the story of AI surveillance and the ways we may alter our behavior in public under its watchful eye.
